Lifting the Lid is a powerful initiative run by Rotary clubs across the Greater Wellington region, providing schools with additional resource to support students struggling with mental health challenges. This programme provides immediate, targeted interventions—ensuring that vulnerable students receive the right support at the right time
Launched by the Kapiti/Horowhenua cluster of Rotary Clubs in 2019, then introduced to the Wellington District in 2022 by the Rotary Club of Port Nicholson, the programme has gained strong support from Rotary clubs throughout the region, making a real difference in young lives.
Exciting News: Lifting the Lid Hutt Valley Launched in 2025!
In a major step forward, the Hutt Valley region has established its own Lifting the Lid Charitable Trust, (LTLHV), to support youth mental health in the Hutt Valley. The LTLHV Trust is made up of representatives from five Rotary clubs across our region:
• Hutt City
• Hutt Valley
• Eastern Hutt
• Petone
• River Valley
This marks a significant expansion of the programme, ensuring that more students have access to critical mental health support.
How Does It Work?
Lifting the Lid operates with speed, trust, and impact. Secondary Schools can apply directly to the LTLHV Charitable Trust, requesting funding to engage:
Mentors and buddy programs to provide ongoing support
Professional counsellors and medical professionals
Alternative interventions, such as community-based youth programmes (for example, Ignite Sport, Naenae Boxing Academy), that foster resilience and well-being
Fast-Track Support:
Funding approvals happen within just 24 hours, ensuring that students get the help they need—when they need it most.
Who Runs the Programme?
The Hutt Valley Lifting the Lid Charitable Trust is led by an executive board made up from the five Hutt Valley Rotary clubs, working hand-in-hand with school management. This high-trust model allows schools to determine the most effective interventions for each student, ensuring tailored and life-changing support.
